Skills

A skill is a set of instructions a team shares: a report format, a checklist, a procedure. Every chat and agent can use the skills its user may see.

The format

A skill is a folder in the Agent Skills format, with one optional Fadenstack file:

incident-report/
├── SKILL.md # the instructions, with front matter
├── faden.yaml # optional: Fadenstack settings
├── references/ # optional: documents the model may read
├── assets/ # optional: templates and other files
└── scripts/ # optional: kept with the skill, never run by Fadenstack

SKILL.md

---
name: incident-report
description: Writes an incident report in the plant's format. Use when someone reports an outage or a fault.
---

# Incident report

1. Start with the time, the line and the impact.
2. ...
Field Rules
name Lower-case words joined by hyphens, up to 64 characters. It is how people and requests call the skill.

license, compatibility, metadata Optional, as in the Agent Skills format

The body is the instructions, up to 100,000 characters.

faden.yaml

Field Means
title The name shown in the console
tags Tags for finding it
activation manual: only when picked; auto: when the request fits; always: with every request
priority 0 to 100, for ordering when several skills apply
trigger_rules keywords and file_types that make an auto skill apply
allowed_tools, preferred_tools, forbidden_tools Which tools the skill may, should or must not use
knowledge_sources Document collections the skill draws on

Limits

Up to 64 files, 512 KiB per file, 4 MiB per version.

Versions and sharing

Every saved version is kept and never changes. A skill has a latest version and a published one. A skill is private, shared with the organisation, or shared with everyone, and each person or group can be allowed to use it or to edit it.

Using skills

  • In the chat, type $ to pick a skill.
  • In an API request, name it in the skills field or write $incident-report in the message. See Chat completions.

Up to five skills can be picked for a message, and up to three more can apply on their own.
